Corpsmember Story: Falling in Love with Forestry

In a world where fast food jobs often seem like the only option for many young adults, Talal Dirar's story stands out as a beacon of hope and inspiration. Just six months ago, he couldn't distinguish between an oak tree and a eucalyptus. Today, he confidently identifies pine trees and Monterey Cypress with ease, thanks to his transformative experience with the California Conservation Corps (CCC).

"I couldn't tell the difference between an oak tree or eucalyptus six months ago," said Corpsmember Talal Dirar. "Now I can tell – that’s a pine tree and that’s a Monterey Cypress. It’s empowering."

Talal made the bold decision to leave behind his job in the fast-food industry to pursue a new path filled with chaps, chain saws, and forestry conservation. Joining a CCC Forestry Corps crew, he embarked on projects aimed at improving forest health and resilience across California.

His journey with the CCC goes beyond manual labor. Talal is actively engaging in educational opportunities provided by the Corps, earning industry-recognized certifications that pave the way for higher-paying and meaningful careers in conservation. Currently enrolled in CCC's year-long service program, he is taking courses in GIS mapping and working towards his fire certifications.

"Right now, we're taking a GIS mapping course and I'm working on my fire certifications," said Talal. "The CCC changed my life and has given me direction of where I'm headed. I want to be a forestry technician with CAL FIRE."

Talal's story underscores the transformative potential of the California Conservation Corps. Regardless of prior experience, the CCC welcomes individuals who are ready to embark on a journey of personal and professional growth. Talal's journey from fast food to forests serves as a testament to the opportunities available within the CCC for those willing to seize them.
